About Vijay

Clinical Training

Vijay undertook his undergraduate training at the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy’s and St Thomas’ (UMDS), now King’s College London. He qualified in 1995, having been awarded the Lord Riddell Prize for Surgery.

He started his ophthalmic training in 1998 working in a number of ophthalmology departments across the United Kingdom and abroad. These included the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine in Japan, Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, St Georges Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital, London.

Following completion of his ophthalmic medical training, Vijay undertook a further two years of sub-specialist fellowship training in cornea and external eye diseases at Moorfields Eye Hospital. He was subsequently appointed as a substantive consultant at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. In 2017, he was appointed as a consultant at the Royal Eye Unit of Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to run the Corneal Service and oversee the Eye Casualty.

Research

In addition to his clinical training, Vijay has also undertaken an extended period of research into diseases of the cornea and ocular surface at the University of Nottingham. This research culminated in the award of a PhD in Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.

Vijay continues to maintain his research and academic interests and is currently a Section Editor of Eye, the official scientific journal of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He has also published several key original peer reviewed publications, a list of these papers can be viewed online via Pubmed.

Teaching & Training

Vijay is a strong advocate of excellence in training and has been extensively involved in teaching and training many groups of health care professionals including medical students, allied health professionals, optometrists and junior ophthalmic surgeons.

Over the past decade, he has been an invited speaker on a number of courses, recent examples of which include the City University Independent Prescribing Course for Optometrists and the Corneal and External Eye Diseases Course at Moorfields Eye Hospital.
